Herbert C. Leeds

Herbert C. Leeds was an early American golf course architect active during the formative years of the sport in the United States. His work is most closely associated with several distinguished layouts in New England, particularly in Massachusetts, where golf took root among the region's sporting clubs in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Leeds is best known for his design of Myopia Hunt Club in South Hamilton, Massachusetts, a course that hosted the U.S. Open four times between 1898 and 1908. His other notable New England designs include Kebo Valley Golf Club in Bar Harbor, Maine, and Bass Rocks Golf Club in Gloucester, Massachusetts. These courses reflect the early American approach to golf design, shaped by natural terrain and the sporting traditions of established hunt and social clubs.

Though less documented than later Golden Age architects, Leeds contributed to the foundation of American golf architecture during a period when the game was transitioning from informal pastime to organized championship sport.
