George William Cobb (1914–1986) was a prolific American golf course architect who designed more than one hundred courses during his career. A member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, Cobb is perhaps best known for creating the Par-3 course at Augusta National Golf Club. His design philosophy centered on creating attractive, enjoyable layouts accessible to average golfers rather than punishing tests that frustrated recreational players.
Cobb's portfolio includes several notable designs in the Carolinas and Georgia. High Hampton Inn in Cashiers, North Carolina, stands as his highest-rated work in Course Vaults. On Hilton Head Island, he designed the Barony course at Port Royal Golf Club and all three nines—Brigantine, Clipper, and Galleon—at Shipyard Golf Club, which can be combined into various 18-hole routings. His work extended to Georgia with The Golfers' Club at Fort McPherson and into the North Carolina mountains with Mountain Glen Golf Course.
Throughout his career, Cobb frequently revisited and renovated his own earlier designs, demonstrating an ongoing commitment to refining his work and adapting courses to evolving standards of play.
