George Cobb

George William Cobb (1914–1986) was one of the American South's most prolific golf course architects, designing more than one hundred courses during his career. A member of the ASGCA, Cobb became known for creating attractive, playable layouts that emphasized enjoyment for the average golfer rather than penal difficulty. His portfolio extended from the Carolinas and Georgia through Florida, Virginia, West Virginia, and beyond, shaping the regional golf landscape for decades.

Among his best-regarded works, Quail Hollow Country Club in Charlotte has gained prominence on the national stage, while courses such as Linville Ridge, Hound Ears Club, and Timuquana Country Club reflect his sensitivity to varied terrain and club needs. Cobb's range extended from resort properties like those at Glade Springs and Fripp Island to private clubs including the Country Club of Charleston, Greenville Country Club, and Mountain Brook Club. His versatility is evident in both his mountain layouts in North Carolina and his coastal designs along the Atlantic and Gulf shores.

Perhaps his most famous contribution is the Par-3 course at Augusta National Golf Club, which remains a cherished element of Masters Tournament tradition.
