Gene Hamm was an American golf course architect and professional golfer who designed more than 60 courses across the Carolinas, Virginia, Tennessee, and New York during a career spanning five decades. Born in 1923 in Raleigh, North Carolina, Hamm began as a caddy at the Raleigh Golf Association and became a PGA member in 1954. After collaborating with Robert Trent Jones on the Duke University Golf Course in 1955 and working briefly in Delaware, Hamm returned to Raleigh in 1959 to launch his independent design practice.
His portfolio includes notable layouts such as Colonial at Colonial Country Club in Thomasville, North Carolina, and Goodyear at Goodyear Golf Club in Danville, Virginia. Hamm developed a significant presence in the Myrtle Beach area, where several of his designs—including Burning Ridge, Indian Wells, and Eagle Nest—remain fixtures of the Grand Strand golf scene. Other representative works include Magnolia at Pinewild Country Club of Pinehurst and Lochmere Golf Club in Cary, North Carolina.
As a competitive golfer, Hamm qualified for the 1958 PGA Championship and 1960 U.S. Open, and won the 1966 North Carolina Open. He continued designing courses until his death in 2016 at age 93.
