1 course on Course Vaults
Mike Clayton is an Australian professional golfer turned golf course architect and commentator, born in 1957. He competed successfully on both the European Tour, winning the 1984 Timex Open, and the PGA Tour of Australasia, where he claimed six victories between 1982 and 1994. His playing career gave him deep practical insight into strategic design and shot values.
Since transitioning to architecture, Clayton has become particularly known for his minimalist approach that emphasizes natural terrain and strategic options. His most celebrated work is The Dunes at Barnbougle Dunes Golf Links in Tasmania, a links-style layout carved through dramatic coastal dunes that has drawn international acclaim and helped establish Tasmania as a must-visit golf destination. The course is often named among the most admired layouts in the Southern Hemisphere for its natural routing and playing characteristics.
Clayton also contributes regularly to golf media as a thoughtful commentator on architecture and the professional game, bringing his dual perspective as both player and designer to contemporary golf discussions.
