Charles Banks was an influential American golf course architect working primarily in the northeastern United States during the early-to-mid 20th century. He developed a reputation for strategic, naturalistic designs that made thoughtful use of terrain and emphasized playability across different skill levels.
Banks's portfolio includes several highly regarded private clubs concentrated in the New York metropolitan area. Essex County Country Club in West Orange, New Jersey, stands among his most accomplished designs, alongside Tamarack Country Club in Greenwich, Connecticut, and Hackensack Golf Club in New Jersey. His work at Montclair Golf Club in West Orange includes multiple nines, demonstrating his extended relationship with that institution.
Beyond elite private courses, Banks also designed accessible public facilities, including Francis A. Byrne Golf Course in West Orange and Hendricks Field in Belleville, New Jersey. His geographic reach extended from Massachusetts (Wyantenuck Country Club) south to Virginia (Cavalier Golf & Yacht Club), though the New Jersey–New York corridor remained his primary canvas.
