Bill Johnston

Bill Johnston was an American golf course architect who practiced primarily in the southwestern United States during the latter decades of the 20th century. His portfolio concentrated on Arizona and Texas, where he created layouts that responded to desert and hill country terrain.

In Arizona, Johnston designed Lookout Mountain Golf Club in Phoenix, which ranks among his most accomplished works, along with Rancho Manana Golf Club in Cave Creek. He also contributed the Links course at Arizona Biltmore Golf Club. His Texas commissions included The Dominion Country Club in San Antonio, Tapatio Springs Hill Country Resort & Spa in Boerne, and Legacy Ridge Golf Club in Bonham. Beyond the American Southwest, Johnston designed the Homestead course at Homestead Golf & Winter Resort in Durham, Ontario.

Johnston's approach favored routing strategies that integrated naturally with existing landforms, allowing topography and native vegetation to shape playing character. His designs from this era remain in play across multiple states and continue to serve their golf communities.
