Bill Diddel

Bill Diddel (1884–1985) was a prolific American golf course architect who designed approximately three hundred courses, primarily across the Midwest, over a career spanning much of the twentieth century. Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, Diddel began his design work with Ulen Country Club in Lebanon, Indiana, and went on to create layouts from Texas to Michigan, leaving a lasting imprint on regional golf.

Among his most notable designs is Northwood Club in Dallas, which hosted the 1952 U.S. Open. His portfolio also includes highly regarded private clubs such as Edgewood Valley Country Club near Chicago, Kenwood's Kendale course and Western Hills in Cincinnati, Woodland in Carmel, Indiana, and Meridian Hills and Highland in Indianapolis. Additional significant works include Sunset Ridge near Chicago, Louisville Country Club, Country Club of Little Rock, and Jupiter Island Club in Florida.

A founding and charter member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, Diddel served as the organization's president in 1954. His contributions to the game earned him induction into the Indiana Golf Hall of Fame and the American Seniors Golf Association Hall of Honor, among other honors. He remained active in golf until his death in 1985 in Zionsville, Indiana, at the age of 100.
