Tom Bendelow (1868–1936) earned the nicknames "The Johnny Appleseed of American Golf" and "The Dean of American Golf" for an extraordinarily prolific career spanning 35 years. Credited with designing some 600 courses across North America, he shaped the foundational era of American golf architecture. Six of his designs have received historic designation by the National Park Service for their significance.

Among his most prominent surviving layouts, Medinah Country Club's #3 course and East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta stand as testament to his enduring influence. Beverly Country Club, The Minikahda Club, La Cumbre Country Club, and Olympia Fields' South course all reflect his signature style. Bendelow's reach extended across the continent, from Calgary Golf & Country Club and Golf Royal Ottawa in Canada, to Palma Ceia in Florida and Del Monte in California. His work at Big Foot Country Club, Nakoma Golf Club, and dozens of clubs throughout the Midwest established the foundational layouts for generations of American golfers.

His remarkable output includes numerous municipal courses that democratized the game—Van Cortlandt Park, Jackson Park, Lincoln Park, and others—alongside distinguished private clubs that have hosted major championships. Many of his designs were later refined by architects like Donald Ross and Harry Colt, though Bendelow's original routing and strategic concepts remain evident.
