Archie Simpson

Archibald Simpson was a Scottish-American professional golfer and course designer whose career spanned the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in March 1866, he competed at the highest level of the game, finishing runner-up in The Open Championship twice—in 1885 behind Bob Martin and in 1890 behind John Ball. Beyond his playing career, Simpson established himself as both a golf club maker and course architect.

Among his design work, Murcar Links near Aberdeen stands as a testament to his understanding of Scottish links golf. Located at Bridge of Don along the Aberdeenshire coast, the course reflects the traditional values of strategic design that characterized the era's best work.

Simpson's dual expertise as a competitive player and craftsman informed his architectural approach, bringing practical knowledge of shot-making and equipment to his layout decisions. He remained active in golf until his death in January 1955.
