Al Zikorus established a focused practice across New England and the Mid-Atlantic, producing accessible public and semi-private courses primarily during the latter decades of the twentieth century. His portfolio concentrated heavily on Connecticut, where he designed or renovated more than a dozen layouts including Timberlin Golf Club in Berlin, Pine Orchard Yacht and Country Club in Branford, and all three courses at Tunxis Plantation Country Club in Farmington. His work extended into Massachusetts with GreatHorse Golf Course in Hampden and Walpole Country Club, as well as projects in Maryland and New Hampshire.
Zikorus favored routing strategies suited to rolling woodland terrain common in southern New England, balancing playability for everyday golfers with sufficient challenge for club competitions. Courses such as Indian Springs in Middlefield and Stonybrook in Litchfield reflect his approach to working within natural contours while maintaining reasonable construction budgets. Though not widely celebrated in architectural criticism, his designs remain fixtures of regional golf, serving municipal and country club memberships throughout the Northeast.
