Sam Whiting was a prominent California golf course architect active in the early-to-mid 20th century, responsible for several enduring Golden Age designs in the San Francisco Bay Area and throughout Northern California. His work helped establish the region's rich golf tradition during a period of significant development.
Whiting's most celebrated achievement is the Lake Course at The Olympic Club in San Francisco, widely regarded as one of America's finest championship tests and a frequent U.S. Open venue. He also designed the Ocean Course at Olympic and the original layout at TPC Harding Park (then Harding Park Golf Club), another San Francisco municipal gem that has hosted major professional events. Beyond the city, his portfolio includes Sonoma Golf Club, Stockton Golf & Country Club, and courses in Sacramento and Grass Valley.
His designs are characterized by their strategic variety and thoughtful use of terrain, qualities that have allowed many to remain relevant nearly a century after their creation. Whiting's contributions to California golf architecture represent an important chapter in the state's golf heritage.
