Arthur Vernon Macan Jr. (1882–1964) was an Irish-born golf course designer who made his mark in western North America after immigrating to Canada. A lawyer by profession and the son of a noted Irish physician who was knighted, Macan combined his legal career with a passion for golf course architecture. He demonstrated considerable skill as a player, winning the Pacific Northwest Amateur in 1913.
Macan's design work concentrated primarily in British Columbia and the broader Pacific Northwest region. His portfolio includes Richmond Country Club and The Nanaimo Golf Club in British Columbia, along with Hillcrest Country Club in Boise, Idaho. These courses reflect his understanding of the region's varied terrain and his ability to create layouts suited to the climate and topography of the Pacific Northwest.
Working during the early-to-mid twentieth century, Macan was part of the generation that established golf's foothold in western Canada and the American Northwest, crafting courses that served growing communities in the region.
