George Waters was an early American golf course architect whose work in the Sandhills region of North Carolina helped establish the area as a prominent golf destination. Active in the early 20th century, Waters contributed to the development of courses that would become cornerstones of Pinehurst's golfing legacy.
His most notable work includes Pinehurst No. 2, which he originally designed before Donald Ross's subsequent transformative work on the property. Waters also designed the course at Mid Pines Inn, which became a respected layout in Southern Pines and remains an important part of the region's golf heritage.
Waters's contributions came during a formative period for American golf architecture, when the Pinehurst area was emerging as a winter golf resort. While detailed biographical information about Waters is limited in historical records, his designs at Pinehurst and Mid Pines represent significant early examples of golf course architecture in the United States, predating the golden age architects who would later reshape many of these same properties.
